Packing is one of the more difficult parts of travelling, and everyone has a different way of doing it. Some throw virtually everything they own into multiple suitcases, while others can pack everything they need into one backpack. No matter where you are going, there are certain things you can do to pack more efficiently and get the most out of your travel bag.
Buy your toiletries when you reach your destination
Instead of wasting space packing toothpaste, shampoo, and razor blades, purchase your toiletries when you arrive at your destination. No matter where you are going, you will be able to access these basic necessities, and you may even be able to find your usual brands. It will also spare you the hassle of running your liquids and gels through security at the airport.
Protect your belongings with hard travel cases
Baggage gets dropped, thrown around, and shoved into small spaces, and you need to protect your things from becoming damaged. Hard-shell luggage and hard cases protect your documents and delicate equipment such as laptops and cameras. Using multiple cases can also help keep your items neat and organized for more efficient travel.
Make a list and stick to it
Make a bare minimum packing list and stick to it. If your trip is longer and you’ll need more clothes, pack a small amount of powdered laundry detergent to wash your clothes with. If where you are staying doesn’t have laundry facilities, you can always wash a few clothing items in the sink and line dry. You can also purchase any items you need, such as extra clothing, at your destination.
Roll your clothing
If you tightly roll your clothes instead of folding them, you’ll be able to fit more into your bag. This is especially important if you’re limited to one carry-on bag and are in need of the extra space. Rolling your clothes will also result in fewer wrinkles than attempting to fold them and fit them into your luggage. You can even get creative and stuff rolled underwear and socks into your shoes.
Pack items with multiple functions
Packing clothing and other items that serve different functions can help you save a ton of space. Scarves and wraps can be worn, used as blankets, used to sling and carry items, and can even be used as towels in tight situations. In addition, you can pack hand sanitizing wipes, ziploc bags, or duct tape for quick fixes on the go.
